Question 9C Below are scenarios of discrimination, trauma, exclusion, and other negative attitudes that people from marginalised groups may encounter. Read each scenario. Based on your own knowledge and learnings from this unit, explain how the negative attitudes highlighted may impact each person. i. Discrimination June was recently hired at a retail store. She recently migrated from Korea, and the other workers tease her behind her back due to her poor English skills and appearance. ii. Trauma The Health Centre recently employed Rafiq, who came to the country as a refugee because of war. Rafiq, however, still shows signs of trauma including unexplained irritability and mood swings, loss of appetite and a disinterest in connecting or socialising with his colleagues. Whilst there have been no complaints from clients, the Health Centre staff claim that he is difficult to work with and not a team player, and are pressuring management to "get rid of him". iii. Exclusion Danielle started to show up to work wearing long clothing. When asked about it, it was found that she was hiding self-harming cuts on her arms and legs. Other staff suddenly stopped inviting her to the regular work social gathering they arrange for the last Friday of every month.
