QUESTION: How the reading comprehension develop in children?

More information to help to understand the question:

  • Two essential processes need to happen in the development of reading comprehension. They are the automatization of word identification and improvements in the efficiency of working memory. The automatization of word reading is the movement from slowly decoding each word (i.e., sounding it out) to being able to use visual recognition to identify it quickly and accurately. Since the brain is limited in its cognitive resources, in order for it to move on to the high demands of reading comprehension, some of the lower level processes like word reading, need to become less demanding, and take up less cognitive resources. One of the ways in which this happens is by automatization, or the quick and correct reading of words without much thought. Relatedly, due to underlying developmental cognitive improvements, working memory also improves as children get older, so fortunately, the demand of working memory in reading becomes easier.
  • A big part of comprehending what you read involves relating what you are reading to what you already know and have experienced. So if you have broad life experience or exposure to a lot of different topics, then you will have more success. This is why our background knowledgeis so important in reading and why the content of what we have children read is also important. Children have very different sets of life experiences, which can help or hinder their success in reading comprehension (and their ability to practice basic reading skills).
  • Within the context of reading comprehension, metacognitionrelates to thinking and reflecting on your reading process. For example, doing comprehension monitoring - asking oneself such questions as "Did I understand that?" or "I don't know that word, but are there parts of that word similar to words that I know?" and other questions when there is difficulty understanding.
