Question:

The Rock Inn has another problem. Just down the lake from the resort is a pulp mill owned by Paper Inc. Recently the water in the lake has had a terrible smell and when the government investigated it traced the smell to a new chemical that Paper Inc. was using in its treatment process. The government tested and stated the water was still safe for drinking and swimming and therefore the government is taking no further action. Rock Inn is furious though because since the smell is so bad, guests at the resort now do not want to go outside or swim and many guests have left. Over 40% of Rock Inn's reservations have now been canceled due to this smell. Paper Inc. insists that it has done nothing wrong and the water is safe, so The Rock Inn cannot make anything. The Rock Inn contacted its lawyers over this situation. One of the Rock Inn's managers, Rod, snuck onto the Paper Inc. property late one night despite signs stating "Private Property Keep Out." Rod smashed many windows in the Paper building and wrote in spray paint in large letters on the side of the building, "Paper Inc. is Killing Us." Video cameras caught Rod's actions and Paper plans to take legal action over these actions.

(Assume that P(s, t) = [pij (s, t)] is a very smooth function of s and t, say, continuously differentiable). Define, Q (t ) : = ap(s, t) at Is=t. (i) Show that ap(s, t) as Is=t = -Q(t). [Hint: Use P(s, t) = I + (t - s)Q(t) + o(t - s)]. (ii) Show that the following partial differential equation is satisfied by the transition probability matrix, ap(s, t) = -Q(s) P(s, t). as (This equation is called the backward equation). Hint: Use the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation P(s, t) = P(s, o) P(o, t).]
