Question Three: (25 points) A cylindrical specimen of stainless steel having a diameter of 0.505 in. and a length of 2 in. is being pulled in tension. Use the load-elongation data tabulated below to complete parts (a) through (d). a) Plot the data as stress versus strain (10 points). (Hint: To calculate the strain, first find the deformation, which is the difference between the length of the specimen corresponding to the applied load and the initial length ( 2 inches). Then, calculate the strain by dividing the deformation by the initial length ( 2 inches)). b) Compute the modulus of elasticity (E) (5 points). c) Determine the yield strength at a yield offset of 0.002 (5 points). (Hint: if you are using Excel to plot the data, right-click on the x-axis and select the format axis option. A window will appear on the right side of the screen. On this screen, change the maximum bound to 0.008 and the major unit to 0.001 . This will help you to estimate the yield strength accurately. d) Determine the tensile strength of this material (5 points)
