When Aaron Sivakumar heard Nik Adii's complaint that Ovlya has not improved from the training, he wondered whether part of the cause might be lack of support shown by Nik as Oviya's manager. Assume that you are Aaron. Explain to Nik Adli: 1. ONE (1) importance of managerial support in training. Suggest TWO (2) ways through which Nik Adli can show his support to Oviya's training.Question 3 Read the case below and answer the questions at the end of the case: Nik Adli was the Manager in the Operational Support Department at Nagamas Holdings. Operational support did a little of everything for Nagamas Holdings: customer account opening, maintenance, record keeping. data entry, customer servicing and other related work. There were 50 employees in the department with six supervisors in various units within the department. Oviya Yuvaraja has been the Quality Unit supervisor for the past eighteen months. The unit was responsible for producing standard operating procedures (SOP) and guidelines for the company as well as distributing information to the staff. Before becoming supervisor, Oviya was a clerk in the unit for five years. As a clerk her performance was commendable - the reason why she was promoted to supervisor. But as supervisor, her performance leaves a lot to be desired. Nik Adli knew there was a problem in the Quality Unit because SOPs were often published late and with many errors. Often the SOPs had to be recalled, revised, and reissued. In addition, Nik received reports from employees that Oviya's unit had a real morale issue. Turnover in the unit was much higher than the other units and there was a serious problem with absenteeism, Further investigation reveals that Oviya was quick to scold, arbitrary and lacked supervisory skills. She never spent time with her employees to coach and train but is quick to scold even for the simplest mistake. Nik knew about this and wondered what action should be taken. Aaron Sivakumar, the Personnel Relations Manager told Nik to consider training, so he contacted Nagamas Holdings' Training Department to enrol Oviya in one of the training programs the company offered. He found out that Chris Chan, one of the trainers will be starting a new program on Advanced Sales Management Techniques. Nik put Oviya's name on the list of participants and sent a memo to Oviya ordering her to attend the training the following week. Oviya was surprised and confused by the memo. She wondered why she was supposed to attend a training on sales when she was responsible for operational matters. She thought she might have received the memo by mistake. She went to see Nik to get some answers. "Look what I got this morning," she said, showing Nik the memo. "Do you know anything about this ?". Nik smiled and said, "Well, I saw that they are offering the training, I thought you might like to attend, so I put in your name." "Don't worry Oviya, just go and attend the training, you might enjoy it." Oviya decided to let the matter rest and returned to her office. A few days later, Oviya received another memo from the Training Department. They had sent a few articles and reports and requested all attendees to read the materials before coming to the training next week. As she browsed through the materials, Nik passed through the office and asked Oviya what she was doing. "I am reading some materials sent by Training to prepare for the class you asked me to go next week," Oviya responded. "You should be reading it at home, now it is working time, you need to finish the documentations that I requested yesterday," Nik said, sounding a little bit annoyed. Oviya closed her browser and returned to her work but silently thought to herself, "If that is how you want it, fine, but I am not reading any work material at home." A week passed and the first day of training arrived. Oviya showed up for the class, but her heart was not fully committed. She was still upset for the interruption to her work and end up completing only half of the training assignment. Nevertheless, Oviya still attended all the training sessions. However, she found the training to be boring. The sessions were mostly lectures, readings, and tests. Most of the materials concern sales and marketing and only a few concerns her as an operational staff, Still, by the end of the week, Oviya managed to pick up some useful tips and knowledge that she felt are applicable to her and was excited to try them out. Her excitement was short-lived. When she returned to work the following week, her desk was piled high with files and documents, all needing her urgent attention. It took her two whole days to complete all the work but on the third day, she was ready to put some of the things she learnt in training to practice. She brought in a whiteboard to her room, bought colourful tags and began to organise her work into different piles labelled 'critical", "important' and 'reserve'. Nik noticed her bustling around and asked Oviya what she was doing. Oviya excitedly told him that she wanted to put to practice what she learned last week but Nik cut her off. "Yes, yes, I am sure they are all exciting, but you are wasting time. You should be working on the report that I want urgently, so please do your work and not all these nonsenses." Oviya bristled and left the room to continue her work. Later that day, Oviya decided to call in some of her subordinates to try some of the coaching methods she learnt. When Nik heard about this. he commented mockingly, "Wow Oviya! Trying to be supervisor of the month?" Oviya had enough. Can I talk to you in private Nik?". When they arrived in Nik's office, Oviya began, "Nik, I don't know what the problem is, but why are you being cynical when I am only trying to put what learned from the training you sent me to practice?". "Look Oviya, " Nik replied, "all those training stuff only works in theory. In my department, what matters are deadlines, reports, and progress. When are you going to get your work done if you are busy labelling files and giving motivation talks to your staff? So, forget about those and focus on your work." Feeling angry and frustrated, Oviya walked out from his office nearly in tears. "So much for training...", she mumbled. As the week progressed, Oviya began to fall behind deadlines. Her subordinates complained that she still shouted and scolded them unnecessarily. Things became worse when one of Ovlya's clerks submitted her resignation saying that she can no longer work under Oviya. Nik was angry. During lunch, he grumbled to Aaron, "the training you suggested was a big mistake and a waste of time, nothing is improved, and I am still stuck with a lousy supervisor."
