Case Analysis Dr. Ellen Zilly, a medical researcher at Pfizer Pharmaceutical Corporation, was an at-will employee. She was the only medical doctor on was team working on the development of the therapeutic drug Vechasize. The Pfizer formulation of Vechasize contained saccharine. Eventually the development process would require human testing. Human testing would not begin until the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the formulation of the drug. Zilly objected to Pfizer's continuing efforts to develop Vechasize using a formulation containing saccharine. She argued that there was significant research indicating that saccharine might be harmful and the drug should not be testing on humans. After informing her supervisor that she felt she would be violating the Hippocratic Oath by continuing to work on the Vechasize project, she was reassigned to a different project with less responsibility, less hours and at a lower rate/hour. Shortly after, Zilly resigned believing that her unwillingness to work on Vechasize had resulted in her effective demotion. She then sued Pfizer for wrongful discharge. Pfizer argued that they did not discharge her but just reassigned her and had the right to do so. She believes that the reassignment was to get her out of the way and the unethical research was still continuing
