Appleby runs a fruit packing company. He has both full time employees and casual employees. Deena and Dala are two of Appleby's employees. Dala is full time employee and Deena is a casual employee. Deena has her shift scheduled for 9-5 on Tuesdays. However last Tuesday when Deena came to work, Appleby said that she was not needed and could go home because the shipment was smaller than usual. Deena is very upset as she needed this shift to pay her rent this week.

Dala has also come to you for advice. Dala is the primary administrator at Appleby. She has been doing all the administration, payroll and HR for the entire company for some years. She is constantly overworked. Last September during the fruit picking season, there was a great deal of pressure on her. Dala was asked to stay additional hours to complete her work. When she asked if she would receive additional pay Dala was told she would not. Appleby said 'If you cannot complete

your work during your work hours, I should not pay you more to complete it.' Dala is very upset.

Dala was having coffee with one of her friends, Diana and told her about what Appleby had said. Diana used to work for Appleby but left a number of weeks ago. When Dala asks why Diana left, Dianna tell her that she was also asked to work additional hours. Diana said that she had always worked from 7 to 3, came in early and leaft early so she can pick up her young kids from school. Diana is a single mother who lives over an hour out of the city. Diana said that Appleby told her that if she will not work the additional hours, she can be replaced easily with someone who would be more than happy to have a full time position. Dala brings Diana in to see you.
