Rap music should not be used as evidence in a trial because it perpetuates racial prejudices, it infringes creative freedom/ violation of artistic freedom, and fails to provide enough contextual knowledge. Rap music is mainly developed and consumed by african American communities and its lyrics often depict harsh realities. The use of rap lyrics disproportionately impacts African American communities, compounding already existing racial imbalances in the criminal justice system. Stated in this video "Since the 1990s, police and prosecutors have used lyrics to build and try criminal cases against rap artists. It's weak evidence and lazy prosecution that blurs the distinction between entertainment and criminal confession. And it's only happening in hip-hop". Using rap lyrics in trials might result in unjust incarceration of African Americans. Prejudice may affect juries and result in unfair results. Using rap lyrics as literal proof inhibits creative expression. Some say if the artist meant it to be an artistic expression and nothing more, say so in court and explain why. But Using Rap lyrics as evidence in criminal prosecutions limits artists artistic freedom. Music is a means of expression.
