My ambition to become a social worker has been sparked by a variety of life events. For instance, my mother has instilled in me the virtue of assisting people throughout my whole life. I have really benefited from my mother's example in understanding the value of lending a hand to others. Together, my mother and I volunteered doing coat drives, food drives, and advocating for marginalized members in our community. From a young age, I knew I had a strong desire to work in a helping profession throughout my life.

In my adolescence and young adulthood, I directly was affected by mental illness and substance abuse. I also was on the receiving end of physical, mental and sexual abuse. When I received help, I was positively impacted by a social worker and mental health therapist who worked with me towards recovery. The adversity I faced throughout these years more deeply ignited my desire to help others gain accessibility to resources that could help them to recover and feel safe. In 2021, my aunt was murdered in Chicago by an individual struggling with substance abuse disorder, mental illness, and poverty. Forgiving this person and transforming my grief into the desire to help fix these systemic injustices and disadvantages people face also contributed to my desire to become a social worker.
