One major natural disaster is a hurricane. I chose this natural disaster because I started my first year of elementary school and it was severely impacted due to Hurricane Katrina. There are many impacts that hurricanes bring to the school population. Not only does it do physical damage to buildings and homes, but hurricanes also cause mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Activity- (K-4)
An activity that could be beneficial to K-4th graders would be expressive arts intervention. An activity that can help students have hope for the future could be to paint a picture of a goal they have for next year (Dunn-Snow, 2007). This activity can help with learning strategies B-LS 7 long and short-term goals and self-management skills B-SMS 7 effective coping skills. Doing this gives children an opportunity to set goals for themselves and look forward to the future.

This activity targets the Social/Emotional Development domain and mindset M 1 belief in the development of the whole self, including a healthy balance of mental, social/emotional, and physical well-being (ASCA, 2014) Behavioral standards include B-LS-7 and B-SMS-7

This activity can promote positive change in the students and community. Hurricanes bring destruction and can create a negative atmosphere in the community. Having elementary students find hope and goals for the future can promote positivity in the classroom and in their personal lives.
