Article Summary

Leys et al. (2017) conducted a quantitative study with the aim of determining an association between family dynamics and eating disorder (ED) also focusing on resilience skills. The authors theorized that the causes of ED are complex and multifactorial such as growing up in an extreme family, different family types, and mediation between family types, resilience, and anxio-depressive disorders. The researchers conducted a survey using scales among 143 women (mean age was 19.9 years). The participants completed questionnaires which included, the Eating Attitude Test (EAT 26), The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scale III (FACES III), and the Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA). The researchers concluded that young women having grown up in extreme families had a higher risk of developing ED, lower resilience scores, and resilience mediates the family type's influence on the occurrence of ED. There was a minimal display of data; more display would have allowed for added clarity of the results.

Research Design, ANOVA and Meaningfulness

The study design was appropriate. The authors chose ANOVA for statistical analysis because it compares means and is used with grouping variables with three or more attributes (Laureate Education (Producer), 2016). The authors utilize this analysis because they wanted to compare means from groups. The variance analysis was the most appropriate choice because the researchers had three hypotheses, data culminating to greater than two groups, and wanted to determine the variance (Frankfort)).

The sample size was selected because it allowed for appropriate power to obtain an effect size of .30, which is meaningful (Leys et al., 2017). Although the sample size was appropriate, with very small samples, a considerable effect size is required to reject the null hypothesis (Plonsky & Oswald, 2017).The effect size was meaningful, but the results of the study do not stand alone. Family dynamics are not the only factors that influence eating disorders.Results from a study suggested that sexual assault was associated with eating disorder pathology (Gomez et al., 2021).The questionnaires were self-reported, and perception played a significant part in the results.
