Sweat was beading on Joans brow, and not just because the air conditioning was out and it was late June. Joan was working on her first IT budget for MWC.

All IT expenditures prior to her hire had been done in an ad hoc manner as the business needs demanded them: A laptop broke, so you bought a new laptop. While Eric and Tom are trying to bring some control to all the budgets, they are still more lax than she was expectingthey didnt even give her a specific budgetary number to work within!

She knows that MWCs revenues for the next year are projected to be $65 million. She knows that her salary is $150k, Maggie and Corey each earn $75k and Sam earns $40k. She remembers reading that IS expenditures are around 10% or earnings in well-run manufacturing firms but thinks it may be more like 2% for construction firms like hers.

She wants to standardize and replace the 40 laptops the organization has at a three-year lifecycle management rate. She wants to replace the Exchange server and localized Office installations with Office365 Business Premium. The operations department has requested 30 Surface devices with Excel for its field employees. She needs to provide internet access to the Oshkosh office at a minimal rate of 30 Mbps down. She has also been asked to provide a networked upgrade for QuickBooks and has been asked to find a better way for the organization to send and receive large documents from its customers and share them within the organization.
