Read the case study below. Type up your responses to the questions and submit. Very early in my career, a student came into my office. He began by commenting, "I hear that you are a good listener. I need to share something with you." He then went on to tell me that he had stolen the master keys for all the offices in the university. He continued to tell his story in great detail. I listened. What would you do? What are the ethical issues involved in this case? At this point in my career, I was fully immersed in a person-centered approach to counseling and knew the importance of careful listening to client stories and focusing on individual needs and goals. I was a "good listener" and I know how to attend to the client. The student, whom I'll call Robert, would enter professors' offices just prior to an exam and steal the test. He would share tests that he found with a very few friends and, of course, use them for his own benefit. It was also obvious that he was very bright and would have done well regardless of whether he had the test beforehand. What did I do? I continued to listen and occasionally reflect feelings. At the end of the session, Robert said "thanks" and that he planned to continue entering offices. As a person-centered counselor, I had followed the rules, but I still felt very uncomfortable. 1. How do you see this case and my behavior as the counselor? What do you see as The ethical issues? The responsibility of the counselor to the client? The responsibility of the counselor to the institution? 2. Based on your answers to these questions, what would you have done differently?
