Read the following scenario and answer all of the questions at the end of this document: GreenWell Inc (GWI) is a leading construction company that specializes in sustainable commercial buildingssuch as shopping centres, casinos and hotels. They have a sound reputation for completing constructionprojects on time and on budget and have also been ranked top of the industry in health and safety for fiveyears in a row. They currently have five active construction sites across Ontario. However they have not beendoing well financially in the last six months, even though they have been awarded more building contracts andare planning to double in size within the next two years. The CEO has called you, the new head of HR, into heroffice to discuss a report of the various performance problems being experienced.I think all of our employees need some training asap! We cannot continue to carry these financiallosses. Do what it takes to get the best experts here to train our workers and correct theseperformance issues. I am prepared to stop all construction and put all our workers through a two-week off-site program.she says, and asks you to arrange this training immediately. The reason why GWIs training is typically delivered off-site by external providers is that GWI does not have anin-house training function. It is the head of HR who has had the responsibility for organizing all companytraining in the past. The line managers are good at providing their employees with opportunities to use theirnew knowledge after they complete a training program.Fortunately, the CEO has agreed to your request for time to conduct a training needs analysis first. You havedecided to focus on the two areas of greatest concern: delays in installing the plumbing in each unit, and anincrease in workplace violence and bullying. These are also the ones that have been responsible for the lionsshare of financial costs. The following is the information you were provided with:There are six certified plumbers assigned to each floor that is deemed ready for plumbing. Each plumber hasan average of 3 years experience, and has completed all industry mandated professional development trainingto keep their certifications valid. Each plumbing team is expected to install and test the plumbing in each unit within 2 hours, in accordancewith the terms of their contract. However, in the past six months, they have been taking an additional 40 90minutes on top of the regular 2 hour installation time to complete an installation and test it.Upon further analysis by the supervisor, it was found that the new plumbing rules require an extra step to becompleted, and this is why the extra 40 90 minutes was needed. However the supervisor found that byproviding a simple infographic and checklist to each team, it sped up the process significantly to the point thatit took only 5 minutes for this extra step to be completed. There are approximately 200 construction labourers at each site, working in shifts. Each is expected to have anaverage of at least 3 years of experience however due to a shortage of experienced workers the 40 juniorconstruction labourers hired at each site only had three months or less of experience. In fact, when looking atthe workers who experienced injuries, all of them were these new hires with less than three months ofexperience. According to employee records, none were provided with training as they were needed on the jobright away and simply job-shadowed more senior workers. The job of a construction labourer is very strenuous. There is a lot of heavy lifting of materials, stacking items, shoveling sand and cement etc, and this can take a toll on their back and limbs. According to notes ofinterviews of the junior labourers, you found that they did not know about safety protocols such as wearing aspecial support for their back, bending at the knees and taking frequent short breaks. Many of the injurieswere related to slips and falls, and the junior labourers did not know about important safety measures such ashaving fall protection when working at higher altitudes, checking harnesses are securely attached and keepingfloors clear of obstructions. All workers report to the job site by 6:30 a.m. each day, perform their assigned duties, have their breaks ontime, and sign off by 4 p.m. They are provided with adequate equipment and time to do their assigned tasks. At the start of every construction project, they are each provided with their targets. At the end of each day, their team leader reviews the tasks accomplished, records them on a report and provides feedback. GWI isknown in the industry for setting very fair targets and treating their employees favourably. Each week theiraccomplishments are recognized and celebrated.Plumber Job SummaryMust have extensive experience performing repairs on different piping systems, snaking drains, fixing leaks, and installing pipes and waterheaters.
