Read the following scenario and answer questions to
Mzansi Minez is a large mining company in South Africa. It has several mining operations, which include gold, platinum, coal and ironore operations, in different provinces. In the past few years, the company radically transformed the diversity in its operations and the group of mines now produces at a higher level. The relationship and communication between management and unions are excellent, which has allowed the gold and ironore divisions to compete in the global market at a higher level than before. Key to the success of the mine was the employment of more female miners. Mzansi Minez has worked hard to change the generalisation that females don't belong in mines because being a miner is a 'man's job'. This false reasoning was evident at the Mzansi Minez ironore mine in Mpumalanga, where no women were employed until many male miners left for better opportunities in other provinces. The ensuing shortage of male miners resulted in the mine appointing more female miners to fill the gap. In consultation with the community and the labour union, many women were provided a chance to become miners. That year, the mine produced the best yield for many years and proved to management that female miners can work in the mine. Unfortunately, along with the increase in female miners there has also been an increase in cases of sexual harassment, particularly incidents where managers offer supervisory roles to female miners in return for sexual favours. While cases of sexual harassment have surfaced following complaints to the human resource HR department and information obtained from interviews because of resignations, many cases have not been reported. During a meeting with HR and the employee union, many females indicated they would not report sexual harassment because other employees would think they were lying, and it would result in nothing changing. The female miners also feel that if they report cases, they will be seen as instigators of trouble and, as a result, their personal information will be revealed.
Trevor and Mary are colleagues who work for Mzansi Minez. They manage a team of miners responsible for explosives. Trevor and Mary have worked for the gold mine for many years, starting as mine workers and working their way up to their current supervisory positions. Trevor and Mary's senior manager, Harrison, noticed that Mary seems somewhat unhappy, and he sets up a meeting one morning to discuss the matter with her. Mary tells Harrison that she is depressed; she thinks that even though she is extremely hardworking and determined, her work seems worthless because of the high work pressures and demands. As a result of this, Mary has started drinking alcohol and smoking to suppress the feelings of depression that have started to consume her. Harrison suggests that Mary take a few weeks' leave to take her mind off work. However, Mary says that nothing can help her situation; all she can do is resign. Trevor, the other supervisor on Mary's team, was recently injured during an inspection in the mine. While entering the mine shaft from the lift cage, Trevor tripped on a bag filled with bottles and plastic containers. Upon further investigation and checking of the CCTV footage on the lift, management saw that a few mine workers had been drinking just before starting their shift. The miners concerned had left their food containers and beer bottles at the entrance so that they could dispose of the rubbish after their shift. Further investigation of CCTV footage revealed that this happens almost daily. All the mines work on a strict policy of no alcohol on Mzansi Minez premises to prevent injuries and accidents.
