Read the following summary of an experiment and provide a summary report. You should include a description of the most likely purpose of the experiment, as well as a clear description of the independent and dependent variables. Finally, describe what we can learn from the results.
Dr. Fischer conducted an experiment in which all participants were asked to estimate what the population of Toronto was in 2001. Before making their estimation, one group of participants was given an arbitrary starting value. This value was chosen by spinning a roulette wheel. Everyone in the group watched the wheel spin to choose the starting value of 4 million. A second group was given a starting value using the same method. Everyone in that group watched the wheel spin to choose a starting value of 5 million. On average, participants in group 1 estimated the population of Toronto in 2001 was 4.25 million people. On average, participants in group 2 estimated the population of Toronto in 2001 was 4.75 million people.
