Although individuals in different manufacturing environments perform different tasks, the risks are similar across the manufacturing sector. In past three years, there have been many accidents and incidents. In some instances, workers suffered head injuries, broke their arm or had to amputate leg. It was reported there have been cases of falling objects, crushing injuries, exposure to high temperature and spilling hazardous chemicals. Information from different sources reveals factory workers did not receive any safety training in past two years. Now, the workers are facing difficulty in focusing at work and some of them suffer from extreme anxiety. From the scenario above it is clear there is no sign of proper WHS management. Assume that you joined Vincent as supervisor and committed to bring a change in the organization. You have formed one WHS committee and the first WHS meeting is due next month. As a leading member of WHS committee you have taken the initiative to give all team members of Vincent a presentation on Health and safety at workplace. By relating your discussion to the ongoing threats that workers face, prepare a convincing presentation on the following points: Consider above workplace scenario and answer the following:
1. Refer to Work Health and Safety Act 2011, and answer the following questions:
I. Outline the legal responsibility of PCBU and its primary duty of care in relation to WHS?
II. Identify the main duties of Officers of a PCBU i.e. supervisors and managers relating to work health and safety?
2. Why must every organization regularly consult with its employees and WHS representatives to achieve safety inthe workplace? Also suggest ways it can be done.
3. What do you know about Code of Practice? What is the significance of Code of Practice in relation to WHS, explain clearly?
4. What is reasonably practicable in ensuring health and safety? Explain with an example.
5. Identify the need to adopt good record keeping in relation to WHS. What are the different records you must keep to adhere WHS policy in your organization?
6. Consider the given scenario and answer the questions thereafter. Linda works as an administrative assistant in a warehouse. A major part of her job includes typing and putting huge amounts of data into computer systems. For the past few weeks, she has been suffering from acute neck pain. She had difficulty in head movement particularly while driving. She took a few days leave on the advice of her doctor. However, the problem starts again when she joins work.
i) What could be the cause of Lindas neck pain?

You supervise a team of 12 staff members from different sections. Now, the Store Manager has advised you to determine the WHS training requirements of your staff. She wants a report on this matter by the end of next month. Discuss how you are going to achieve that?
8. Training analysis you conducted has revealed a gap in knowledge and required competencies of your staff members. Develop two-day training program (outline) for your staff. You are required to design a training plan for two different groups based on their work pattern and job responsibilities. (You may mention groups 1 and group 2).
9. Develop a table which shows a detailed cost structure of current training program. You should mention different cost items like resources requirement e.g. books, computers and other tools and safety accessories that you could use for the training.
10. In relation to the given scenario in question 1 above, you have found that your staff members do have some inadequacies regarding manual handling. What possible action you may take as a supervisor to rectify this? (Hint: Design a procedure manual of correct lifting techniques and attach this with your answer paper)
11. a) How can you implement procedures to control risks using hierarchy of control? (Students can write practical examples from their own work experience and knowledge.) Give examples.
b) How would you identify and report gaps and inadequacies in hazard control?
12. As a supervisor, how would you like to manage hazard reporting and control procedures in an ongoing basis in an organization where WHS incidents are more likely to occur (such as Construction Company, mining company or a heavy engineering firm etc.).
