Read the report below. Provide a brief summary of your analysis and the conclusions drawn about correlations. Then analyze the limitations of the statistical test and/or possible alternative explanations for your results.
There are 4 variables. Quiz 1, Total, GPA, and Final. These are all continuous variables. Is there a positive correlation between total and final? Null hypothesis: there is no correlation between Total and Final. Alternate: there is significantly positive correlation between Total and Final. Is there any significant correlation between Quiz 1 and GPA? Null hypothesis: There is no correlation between Quiz 1 and GPA. Alternate: There is significantly zero correlation between Quiz 1 and GPA.
The first variable (gpa) has a skewness value of -0.266, this value is between -0.5 and 0.5, which implies the data under this variable are normally distributed. The kurtosis value is -0.753, this is less than +1, this implies that the distribution is leptokurtic. For the second variable (quiz1), the skewness value is -0.867, this falls between -1 and -0.5 implying the distribution is moderately skewed. For kurtosis, the value is 0.383 which is also less than +1 implying that the distribution is leptokurtic. For the third variable (final), the skewness value is -0.004, this falls between -0.5 and 0.5 implying the data is normally distributed. For kurtosis, the value was -0.642 which is also below +1 implying the distribution is leptokurtic. Finally, for the general model, the skewness value is -0.756 which implies that the data is moderately distributed. With the kurtosis of 0.775 which is less than +1 implying the general model is leptokurtic. We can therefore conclude that the assumption of normality was not violated since the general model was moderately distributed.
Total-final correlation: The null hypothesis is rejected and the correlation is significant. Gpa-Quiz1 correlation: The null hypothesis is not rejected and the correlation is not significant. Explanation: The general decision rule of a hypothesis test is as follows: If p-value , then reject the null hypothesis. Otherwise, do not reject the null hypothesis. Total-final correlation: Here, the correlation coefficient between the variables total and final is 0.569. The sample size (n) is given as 105. Hence, the degrees of freedom is, n-2=105-2=103. The corresponding p-value is 0.000 which is less than the level of significance (0.01). Hence, the null hypothesis is rejected and the correlation is significant. Gpa-Quiz1 correlation: The correlation coefficient between the variables gpa and quiz1 is 0.113. The sample size (n) is given as 105. Hence, the degrees of freedom is, n-2=105-2=103. The corresponding p-value is 0.252 which is greater than the level of significance (0.01). Hence, the null hypothesis is not rejected and the correlation is not significant.
