It is pack away time at the 4-year-old kindergarten and educator, Marg, has selected Zara’s name from the list to be responsible to ring the ‘five minute warning’ bell. Marg reminds Zara to make sure she tells the children there will be five more minutes of play time and then we will be packing away for lunch. Zara takes the bell and begins to walk around the room ringing it and informing the children of what is happening.
Five minutes later, Marg asks Zara to ring the bell again instructing the children that it is now pack up time. As Zara walks around the room ringing the bell, Marg and the other educators assist the children in various areas of the room to tidy up. There is lots of positive language and encouragement given to the children as they are all helpers working together to keep their space tidy.
Marg observes that there are some children who are not helping to pack away, but roaming around the room instead. Marg provides these children with choices about which areas they could tidy up. Marg assists in the block area and provides clear directions to the children about which blocks belong where and what the children can do after they have finished that task.
Once the room is tidy and the children group together, Marg communicates to the children how proud she is of the way everyone came together and worked as a team to tidy up the space.
