read this first before research: topic global warming from fossil fuels:
The topic I choose to research this semester is Global warming from fossil fuels. Global warming from fossil fuels is a topic that has been widely discussed for several decades now. Before researching this topic, I had a basic understanding of the harmful effects of fossil fuels on the environment. I assumed that global warming was caused mainly by the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. I imagined that the consequences of global warming could be devastating, including rising sea levels, more frequent and intense natural disasters, and the extinction of various species. I have also personally experienced the effects of climate change, such as hotter summers and more severe storms. One aspect of the global warming issue that I am particularly interested in is food waste. Food waste is a significant contributor to global warming as it produces methane gas, which is a potent greenhouse gas. I am interested in learning more about how food waste contributes to global warming, what measures can be taken to reduce, and how individuals and communities can be make a difference in this area.
My three research questions are: How does food waste contribute to global warming? to answer this question, I plan to research the process of food decomposition and methane gas production. I will also look into statics on the amount of food waste produced globally and the impact it has on the environment. My second question is: What measures can be taken to reduce food waste? To answer this question, I plan to research current initiatives and policies aimed at reducing food waste. I will also look into practical tips for individuals and households to reduce their food waste. My third question is: How can individuals and communities make a difference in reducing food waste and its impact on global warming? To answer this, I plan to research successful case studies of communities and organizations that have implemented strategies to reduce food waste. I will also explore different ways individuals can get involved in reducing food waste, such as volunteering or supporting local food banks. I will use variety of sources for my research, including academic articles, reports from environmental organizations, and online resources.
Next step: For this assignment, you are going to use the research plan you developed in Discussion Forum Three to search for sources on the internet. The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your ability to evaluate online sources, so you do not need to seek sources from the Macomb library databases this week. In fact, you probably do not need to look beyond a Google search of online sources, though you may want to use multiple search terms or look beyond the first page of search results.
Ultimately you are going to find and evaluate four internet sources, which can be from articles from popular news outlets, websites from government agencies or nonprofit organizations, or web pages from schools or companies. Choose sources you might be interested in using for your Problem/Solution Research Paper, but know they do not need to be "perfect" in terms of quality at this point. The point of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your ability to discern quality sources from not-so-quality ones.
To begin, locate four relevant sources related to your topic that you might consider using as research in your final essay; then, typing directly into the scoresheet in the attached file (below), create MLA Works Cited entries (in alphabetical order) for the sources you have found. I will be giving feedback on the correctness of the citation formats, but you are not graded on the correctness in this assignment since it usually takes a bit of practice to get everything right in them.
In order of how the sources appear in the Works Cited list (alphabetical by the first word, which is the author's last name or the title), evaluate the four sources by assigning a score of 0 (low quality) to 5 (high quality) for each of the criteria in the table provided. Explanations for each of the criteria can be found in the Week 3 Module under the "https://library.georgetown.edu/tutorials/research-guides/evaluating-internet-content
Links to an external site.link from Georgetown University.
After scoring and adding totals, provide written rationale for your total scores by explaining the strengths and weaknesses of each source. Explanations should be typed below the chart in the document provided, and they should clarify why you deducted any points from a source's score or explain why a source is or is not credible. Use a minimum of five sentences for each rationale. Feel free to refer to the student sample below for guidance.
