Recently your boss, the President of your company received a letter from the head of a civil rights group. The group, Boston Civil Rights Coalition, is complaining that your company has failed to diversify your work force and that none of your senior managers is Black, Hispanic, or Asian. While the allegations are accurate, your company has made some improvement in hiring minority workers and has attempted to hire minority managers, thus far without success.
Your boss is irate, and shows you a draft of a letter he plans to send in response to the complaint. After reading the planned response, you know that his intemperate remarks and confrontational tone will only lead to bad publicity, which will ruin the reputation of the company, and destroy your efforts to hire and promote minorities.
First, professional memo to your boss, explaining why you think his draft response is inappropriate. Remember that the person your writing to is your boss and so your tone needs to reflect a degree of diplomacy. Second, draft a letter that you propose to your boss, as a possible response to the complaint, that you think would defuse the situation, and hopefully, lead to enlisting the Boston Civil Rights Coalition, to help you recruit minority employees and managers.
