Reestablishing the Vision of a Research Center*: CLTs in Practice Case Exercise for PAF 410 The Independent Center for Clinical Research (ICCR) is an innovative company that has experienced rapid growth under CEO Rachel Adams. Rachel started her career as a researcher at a large multinational pharmaceutical company but during her tenure she realized that independent companies conducting clinical trials were much-needed but non-existing. In collaboration with former colleagues Rachel started the ICCR with a vision for the company to make it a model research center that would blend credible science with efficient and cost-effective clinical trials. To help accomplish that, ICCR put a great effort in maintaining strong ties with academia, industry, and the community. Under Rachel's leadership the research center experienced incredible growth. However, the success also resulted in many new challenges that required changes to the existing organization. Of particular concern to Rachel she noticed that some departments had started to shift the focus of ICCR in a direction that contradicted her vision for the company. She built the company from the ground up on her vision and she did not want to see the company becoming more similar to standard pharmaceutical companies dedicated primarily to research and development of new drugs. To reestablish the idea of the company Rachel decided to reorganize a core part of ICCR by merging two departments. One department [X] has long been true to the Rachel's vision and ideal for the company focusing on using the latest research from academia to create innovative ways to increase efficiency and lower cost of clinical trials. The other department [Y], however, had shifted its operations to a one-eyed focus on industry spending more time and resources on issues related to development of new drugs. As the leader of department [X] you and Rachel have close ties and you were part of the few people that helped found the ICCR 10 years ago. You believe in Rachel's leadership and her vision for company. Rachel has asked you to get the company through this difficult merger and help reestablish her vision for the company as part of the process of merging the two departments. The workers from the two departments are gathered for a staff meeting this Friday where you will break the news of the merger and present the reestablished vision for the new department. As preparation for the meeting you are considering how to communicate the vision to the workers. Some workers might be in opposition to the restructuring and you are therefore attentive to not only presenting the vision in a motivating and inspiring way but also to assert yourself as the leader of the new work unit. Being perceived as leader like and competent will help you establish credibility around the new vision. You have learned that using different charismatic leadership tactics can help you in this respect and you therefore need to: Read the case Reestablishing the Vision of a Research Center Write aninitial post in which you provide a brief opening speech for the staff meeting in which you use charismatic leadership tactics to: e Break the news of the merger * Highlight the importance of the new vision [the vision you created in Week 5] * Emphasize the need for people to stand up as one collective with a shared purpose. Consider the following when crafting the opening speech: e What are the charismatic leadership tactics outlined Antonakis et al.? * What tactics seem appropriate for the message that | want to deliver? e Can | mixdifferent tactics or use multiple tactics at once? e How can | use metaphors, contrasts, stories, or references to moral conviction to help my cause
