Keeley is a forensic accountant working for the State Revenue Authority. Keeley's salary is $1 10,000. Keeley enjoys buying art and has over the last decade bought many pieces of art, some of which are very valuable and some of which only have sentimental value to her. Keeley purchased a painting Sunshine on Despair by a promising young Syrian reigee artist Hallie Ahmed for $200,000 on 22 August 2019. The painting hangs on her home office wall in full view of her colleagues and clients during video conferences. During one such conference Keeley receives an astonishing offer from a client to buy the painting and reluctantly agrees to sell the painting on 10 June 2021 for $600,000. During the time she owned the painting she paid $10,000 to insure the painting. Coincidentally Keeley also sold 1,000 of her shares in Forrest Company Pty Ltd that she had bought on 1 July 2009 for $10 each for $3,500. CommSec Online Share Trading charged her $50 to buy and another $50 to sell her shares. Required: With reference to appropriate tax legislation, cases and/or Rulings, calculate for Keeley her tax payable for 2020:9021. You answer must include a discussion of her capital gains tax liability as well as her total tax payable (ignoring Medicare levies and offsets). NB for teachers: Part B as it is NOT an exam requires students to research and find correct legislative provisions. Mere calculations are not enough. You may emphasise in lead up to assignment release that the purpose of this is not to test your ability to do calculations but to find answers in the tax acts and apply lavlr to facts
