Reflection #1 Transference, Countertransference, Co-transference
Task 1. You are to imagine yourself an intern as a counseling psychologist.
Invent a client
Follow the outline below for an invented client. Could be a composite of many people you have known. You might consider a superhero or famous movie character or even someone from Shakespeare's plays.
List these aspects for your client, keep this format. No lengthy paragraphs. Consider this an intake form.
- Identity: First name, age, gender, ethnicity, or culture, socioeconomic, family situation
- Presenting problem - be specific, why is the client seeing you as a counseling psychologist? Relevant symptoms? Was there a precipitating event? Be concise and specific.
- What are the client's 2-3 treatment goals? These are not your treatment plans. What are the client's treatment goals they wish to accomplish in therapy with you?
Task #2 Define Transference and Countertransference
What do these terms mean? How are they relevant to the client and to the therapist?
Define the two terms, use at least two different sources, such as APA website or psychology dictionary or a peer reviewed article, fully cite the sources. Avoid relying on general web sites like SimplyPsychology. Skip a space between defining the two terms.
Describe how these two terms will be a part of therapy with your client. Give a specific example for transference and countertransference.
Task #3 Expressive Therapies
There are many expressive therapies used in psychotherapy. Expressive therapies are used to help reach the therapist and client's treatment goals.
Examples of expressive therapies include art therapy, play therapy, drama therapy, music and poetry, and movement therapies. These all require specialized training for use with clients. If you approach your client with psychodynamic/ psychoanalytic therapy, you might use dream interpretation or active imagination or hypnosis, and this might include art therapy or play therapy.
Task - Search for two expressive therapies you might use with the client you created. Define and fully cite and state why you might use these approaches with your client. Stay with the definitions and descriptions of the actual expressive therapy for giving your reason for use; not something you make up - like it might be fun or interesting.
- Attach an article on one of the key terms you defined (Transference, Countertransference, Co-transference)
- Attach a peer reviewed article on one of the expressive therapies you might use with the client.
