Case: Cascadia Credit Union
Cascadia Credit Union is focused on financial empowerment and community improvement throughout central and western Washington. The credit union provides a wide variety of services to its approximately 40,000 members, including personal credit lines, mortgage loans, auto loans, medical savings accounts, and individual retirement accounts.
In the last four years, Cascadia Credit Union has seen significant growth in both its membership counts and financial products it offers. Last quarter, the credit union purchased and implemented a new database management system (DBMS) to accommodate the needs of its growing institution. The DBMS provides an interface between underlying relational data and end-users, ensuring that the credit union has consistent, valid, and accessible data.
Cascadia Credit Union provides users access to varying numbers of tables in its relational database depending on the active directory group to which the user belongs. The active directory group defines the view permissions for its users. Loan officers have access to a large number of tables in order to work with members on submitting loan applications. Three of these tables are shown below.

Case Analysis
- Cascadia Credit Union is a non-profit organization whose earnings benefit its members. Discuss some examples of how Cascadia can use its relational database system to improve its services.
- How are the data in the MEMBER and APPLICATIONS tables connected? How are the APPLICATIONS and AUTO LOANS tables connected?
- Given a first and last name, how could a credit officer discover what type of auto loan a member has?
- Cascadia Credit Union would like to consider partnering with local colleges and universities to offer promotional pricing to faculty and staff. In what ways could they identify which universities they should prioritize?
- Cascadia Credit Union wants to understand how the start of the school year (in September) and the start of summer (in May) impacts the number of auto loans. How could they use their relational database to obtain relevant data?
- The credit union wants to develop an overview report about its auto loans for 2016. What data might be useful to include in this report?
- You have been hired as a marketing and pricing consultant to help Cascade develop a strategy to increase the number of auto loans it gives next year. Brainstorm some strategies to offer Cascade. (Use the relational tables above, or imagine additional data tables Cascade might have.)
- As a federally-insured credit union, Cascadia Credit Union abides by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) regulatory framework regarding data security and data breach reporting standards. This regulatory framework defines the process and timeline of reporting potential data breaches as well as the standards of acceptable practice for ensuring data security, integrity, and transmission of member data. How can the DBMS help Cascadia Credit Union comply with NCUA regulations?
- Cascadia Credit Union managers have a quarterly technology review meeting. What are some of the risks of using this relational database system that should be discussed?
- Data quality is a top priority for Cascade Credit Union. What might be the impact if data in a table was not correct? How could Cascade validate that its data is accurate?
