In this case, your responses or replies include answers to the following: 1. Look over your fellow student's response to items 1 through 2 above. Do you agree with his or her analysis? How so or how not? 2. Do you agree with your classmate's suggested synthesis of theories in item 3? What elements of their diagram might you change and why? 3. Discuss how you might include elements from one additional theory (not the theories already described) into the student's diagram (i.e., what would you add and where)? Number your answers to the questions above. 1. The Goal-Setting Theory was the most formative for me. It provides specific examples of how to utilize making a plan to succeed in anything you want. For example, the theory suggests you find a goal you know you can commit to. Second, make sure to have a specific milestone from point A to point B to ensure you know where to direct your energy (PSU, L6, 2023). Third, the Goal-setting theory asks you to ensure you aren't making the goal too easy (PSU, L6, 2023). It gets boring or too hard for you to give up. Lastly, set up a channel through which you can get feedback (PSU, L6, 2023). An excellent example was meditating every day for two minutes. I sat down and wrote down my goal. From previous experience, I know that I could not start with 10 minutes, so I made it reasonable at first, and then after sticking with that for a few weeks, I added a minute. For my feedback, my sister held me accountable, asking me about my progress every couple of days. 2. Of all the theories we discussed, Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory was the most summative. The theory proposes two factors for job satisfaction: hygiene factors and motivators (PSU, L9, 2023). Herzberg goes into the different categories under each factor, such as pay and benefits for hygiene factors and autonomy and responsibility for motivators (PSU, L9, 2023). However, the theory does not provide specific steps to achieve or change these factors. An excellent example of this was an internship I did last summer. The pay was great, but there was no autonomy, and responsibilities were close to none, which made the experience boring and satisfying. However, when considering Herzberg's theory, there is no suggestion on how to fix the issue. 3. Goal Setting Theory & Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs reaching the different levels of need during a lifetime. Physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Goal Setting Theory Setting goals as a source of motivation to reach your desired goals. Connection Point: Learning how to set goals in an effective manner can help individuals fulfill their needs. 4. Qenani-Petrela et al. (2007) article found individuals in Generation Y are not likely to stay in one job for a long time. In addition, members of this generation prefer when there is more team effort in the workplace instead of the traditional hierarchical structure of the workplace. There are often critiques of Generation Y's work ethic, and as someone looking from the outside at Generation Z, I believe it is because the social temperature is changing, and they have a different perspective on life. Although pay is important to Generation Y, it is not a motivator according to Hezberg's two-factor theory (Qenani- Petrela et al., 2007). There have to be other factors that keep them coming to the job, like autonomy and creativity.
