A project manager may manage multiple projects; however, they do not oversee how all those projects are related or determine the best strategy on how to implement multiple projects to achieve specific overarching goals as well as timeframe. For example, one of our teams is in Solutions Engineering and Development and they make over 1,500 changes a quarter to our key systems. Those changes are bucketed into streams or programs: Automation, Connection, Integration, and Operational. I think the key difference between a project manager versus program manager is the focus of the organization. A project manager is responsible for projects in a single business function while a program manager require[s] a far higher degree of cross-business function coordination (Bedker, 1999). As a program manager, you are looking at the organizations strategic initiatives and comparing them to the change requests from the business to ensure they are in alignment with each other.
