1-Harrington, et al. (2020) discuss the role of environmental and individual factors in the ability of children to employ emotional regulation to navigate new relationship when they first begin attending school. ER represents a constant negotiation within children's relationship to achieve positive socio-emotional outcomes. While ER is first learned in childhood, many adults continue to struggle with ER throughout their life and relationships suffer as a result. While the authors recognize that teaching adults how to regulate emotions is fundamentally different process than teach children, I believe many of the principles carry over. For instance the authors discuss the importance of helping a child recognize, identify, and talk about emotions. This process of becoming mindfully aware of one's internal state and learning to give appropriate language to feelings is also important for adults who are growing healthy ER skills later in life.

I work for a Christian discipleship and leadership training organization that focuses on the development of emotional health among adult populations. One of the workbooks we use in small groups deals with understand and properly expressing emotions. We find that many adults have a severely limited vocabulary of their own emotions. Once they are able to more accurately define what they are feeling, they are often able to express their feelings in healthier ways. Understanding common interventions among children has reinforced my understanding and given me new ideas for working with adults in developing a healthier ER. References: Harrington, E. 2-Early to middle childhood is my favorite period for kids. I enjoy watching them explore and develop their independent personalities. This week, the readings were very informative. One passage stood out to me that was very relevant to my situation right now, the textbook mentioned that sibling conflict is quite common and found that it occurs at an incidence rate of 6.3 times per hour through toddler and preschool periods (Broderick & Blewitt, 2019). This statistic could possibly be underestimated in my situation with my feisty preschooler. The suggestion of modeling good conflict resolution skills and teaching her how to manage her feelings was spot-on advice and it's what I teach the kids I work with.

3-Cognitive and emotional growth are two important aspects of early childhood development, setting a foundation for later life. Various factors influence these aspects, such as the environment and parents or caregivers. Parenting practices can influence specific child characteristics, such as attachment and temperament traits. Sensitive, responsive, quality caregiving can promote positive social development in children, affecting their emotional development, attachment formation, physiology, and behavior (Broderick & Blewitt, 2020).

I have a cousin whose third child is extremely attached to her and constantly wants to be with her all the time. He is two years old. He is always stuck to her side and cries when she isn't around. Since he is so attached to his mom, no one else can babysit him. From my perspective, it can be difficult for both her and her child, as it can be frustrating at times.

I have attached a TED talk from seven-year-old Molly Wright, who discusses how parents and caregivers can support children's healthy brain development. (I found this fascinating; she is only seven years old!) Reading to children, playing with them, or even talking to them are a few ways to promote healthy emotional development.
