Personal jurisdiction refers to whether a court has authority over a specific individual FindLaw. (2008). In the scenario, the Maryland court has jurisdiction over Clean, based on the location the Clean Company. This means that you can unquestionably sue in Maryland because that is where the business had established residence or was physically located. Residence in a state is enough to give the courts state jurisdiction over you. This also applies to where your company's headquarters are located. In the scenario provided, TLG's client, Clean, is facing litigation and needs advice. Personal jurisdiction is a very important legal principal that often impacts the case's outcome. Clean is located in Maryland but also advertises in several other States, including Virginia, where ABC Corporation is incorporated. Clean contracted with ABC to provide cleaning services in Norfolk, Virginia, where the incident occurred, and ABC paid for the services. However, ABC was not satisfied with the services and is now suing Clean to recover the cleaning costs.

In this case, consent can also be used to establish personal jurisdiction. The one thing that would need to be done by the Virginia court is they will have to apply the long-arm statute to establish personal jurisdiction (The U.S. Willful Practice of Long-arm Jurisdiction and Its Perils, n.d.). The fact that Clean advertised aggressively in Virginia on various platforms, such as the internet, social media, television ads,and mailings paper correspondence. This expands the jurisdiction to the Virginia courts. Clean's activities in Virginia must be substantial and continuous to justify the court's jurisdiction.
