According to the "Harvard Business Review" article, the information revolution is sweeping through the economy. Dramatic reductions in the cost of obtaining, processing, and transmitting information are changing the way the business is done. No company can escape its effects.

The article states that Most general managers know that the revolution is underway, and few dispute its importance. As more and more of their time and investment capital is absorbed in information technology and its effects, executives have a growing awareness that the technology can no longer be the exclusive territory of "Electronic Data Process" or "Information System" departments. As they see their rivals use the information for competitive advantage, these executives recognize the need to become directly involved in the management of the new technology.

Today, information technology must be conceived broadly to encompass the information businesses create and use and a broad spectrum of increasingly convergent and linked technologies that process the information. In addition to computers, data recognition equipment, communications technologies, factory automation, and other hardware and services are involved. (Harvard Business Review).

Harvard Business Review also explains that the information revolution is affecting competition in three critical ways:

It changes industry structure and, in so doing, alters the rules of competition.

It spawns whole new businesses, often from within its existing operations.

It creates a competitive advantage by giving companies new ways to outperform their rivals.
