1. Were you aware of these issues? How have things changed (or stayed the same) since 9/11?
Growing up I have always been aware of the discrimination which Arabs and Muslims face when living in America. While I was not alive during 9/11 I have heard horrible stories of people on that day and days after finding Arab people and Muslim people and performing acts of violence and hate against them out of anger and paranoia. Today there are still many large stigmas around Arab people, and Muslims which hold no truth such as one which the book touches on, that not all Arab people are muslim and vice versa. However a more harmful stigma which remains is that Islam is a religion of violence and oppression due to the way our media has covered it since 9/11. However, I would argue that one thing which has changed for the better since 9/11 is that there are now a greater number of allies for this community, which has helped clear some of the stigma of both groups.
2.Chapter 13 presents EEOC cases of egregious discrimination against older workers, which are often based on assumptions about their (in)competence, and of sexual harassment against younger workers. Are you familiar with any cases, or potential cases of age discrimination? If so, please discuss or comment on one of the cases described in the chapter.
I am not personally aware of any cases or potential cases of age discrimination so I will be commenting on the case written on page 386, which involves Loreal being sued for age discrimination. When I read this case, it sounded as if the vice president of sales was intimidated or just did not like Joyce Head. Being told that someone is too old to live in a certain region, and commenting on their physical appearance because of their age is never right, even outside of the workplace. What I found more shocking is that Head was terminated for going to human recourse about the situation, and they should be the ones who protect her from situations like this. Overall, I am glad that Head was able to settle with the organization but this makes me very suspicious of Loreal as an organization due to the fact that their diversity troubles didnt even end here.
3. Read the Supreme Court Ruling from Spring 2023 regarding employee/employer rights regarding working on Sunday related to religious freedom. What did the court rule around requiring employees to work on Sunday if its against their religious beliefs?
The court ruled that it is illegal for employers to discriminate on the basis of religion, which means that they must allow workers to observe sundays as a day of rest so long as it accommodates their religious beliefs and does not impose undue hardship on the employer. The court also said that undue hardship should be based on individual cases and logic should be used to define these hardships just like any other situation.
4. Do you support the court ruling or disagree with it; Why?
I do support the court ruling as this country was founded on a number of different freedoms, and the freedom to practice religion is one which sets us apart from many different nations. Title VII was put in place to protect people of various religious backgrounds, and if the court had come to the opposite decision, it could have created a lot of uncertainty around this legislation which protects so many.
