Required: Discuss whether Nicole is carrying on a business for the current tax year (citing authority where appropriate)

Nicole, a barrister, bought a 20,000 square meter block of land on which she built a home to live. As the soil on the land was fertile, in the current tax year, Nicole decided that it might be worthwhile growing orange trees on the land. Nicole spent a couple of months seeking advice from the relevant government department and other nearby farmers on the best way to grow the fruit. Nicole also got soil analysis done to confirm that it was suitable for growing fruit. Nicole then planted 50 orange trees on this land. Nicole however did not expect to make a profit for at least 6 years. Nicole would usually spend 5 or so hours a weekend looking after the trees. In the current tax year she has made income of $8,000 and incurred expenses of $11,000 relating to the orange tree operation.
