Requirements for theWritten Assignment (Short Paper)based onPlanet Money Podcast
NPR Planet Money Podcastisavailable fromhttp://www.npr.org/blogs/money/- podcastsareposted weekly on Tuesday and Friday. You are required to writea reflection paper by the last day of class(Sunday,May9)based on any podcast you choose. The paper should be about2pages long. You are free to choose anyof the podcasts posted under the planet money linkfor the paper as long as it reveals ideas from economics. The paper should be uploaded in the link provided. The paper is due bySunday,May 9.
To receive full credit your reflection paper must:
Relate to content in thatchosenpodcast (please include the title of the podcast to which you are referring in the title/subject of yourpaper).
Describe and define an economic concept addressed in the podcast.
Add to the content of the podcast, specifically your reflection paper is not just a summary of what you heard.Your paper should either be:
Linking: Make a link: Make a further connection of the topic to something in your reading, or that we have discussed in class (this connection should be clarifying, specifying or building on what is already in the podcast.); or
Probing: Probe the question further: Ask a question about something mentioned/discussed in the podcast, and include at least an initial attempt at an answer to that question. The answer can be based on some research you do (simple online research, or more in depth - be sure to cite your sources), or on some economic thinking that you do on your own.
This assignment requires you to practice your economic thinking by applying economic concepts to current news, events and issues that you might not generally think of as "economic."You can include any additional comments you wish.
However, try toincludesome of the relevant economic terminologieslearned in the classin thatdiscussion.I shall be looking atbothstructure as well ascontent while grading the paper. Then, inanew page beginwith an introduction, followed by the main body, and finally a conclusionin sequence. The2 pagerequirement appliesonlyto themaincontentportion(introduction-main body-conclusion).
The introduction and the conclusion can be one paragraph each. In the introduction also include a one or two sentence description of what is the main body of the paper. Then discuss the topic in the main body of the paper in a number of paragraphs. The conclusion will summarize the main paper along with any other observations you may have about the topic. It may help to organizeyour writing if you use some sub-headingsfor the paragraphs.Thepapers should have at least threereferences one of which may be your prescribedtext. You mayuseany styleAPA/MLA etc.you may be familiar withfor references but dosoconsistentlyforallthereferences. That also applies to references from the internet. Wikipediaand a few other similar websites area good and ready source of information in the internet and you may accessthemfor researching any topic. However, please, do not use Wikipedia as a primary reference. You may find a number of primary references used by Wikipedia while it explains the concept and these primary references, if you can access them, may be cited.
Since this is a paper on aneconomic topic, you are welcome to use graphs charts etc. to supplement the discussion and highlight major issues.Use ofshort tableswith numbers is also permitted.
