COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSED:

1. CLO 2: Prepare advanced-level proposals and research reports (informational/analytical) on

program-related topics; summarize and integrate effective research sources.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Prepare a formal research report based on the chosen topic you identified in your research proposal (unless a new topic has been approved by instructor). Note: If you work in a group (no more than 4 students per group) to co-author this report, the distribution of work must be equal. Please ensure all group member names are included on the title page of your research report, and please submit only one final report file per group in .pdf*.

Students must submit all components of the formal report (refer to the corresponding grading rubric and Module 8 .PPT posted on FOL). As discussed in the lectures and as noted in the resources provided in modules 5 and 8, your introduction should pose a problem question

or provide a purpose statement, including scope limitations (please refer to the resources provided for detail and examples).

In addition, all reports must be in proper APA Style format (remember, APA Format was covered in

Modules 3 and 8).

The topic of your report must be a program-related issue; and, ideally, your research report topic

should be based on the topic approved in your informal report (proposal). Please contact me

well in advance if you wish to change your topic. Instructor approval for topic changes cannot be

guaranteed.

METHOD OF EVALUATION:

Your report will receive a mark out of 100. Please refer to the Research Report Grading Rubric for

detail and evaluative components. *NOTE: students who submit co-authored reports must also

complete a confidential peer evaluation/review (details provided on FOL).

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Please refer to the Research Report Rubric for detail on evaluative criteria.

You may wish to review the sample formal report document from our COMM text for

guidelines on structure, content, organization, formatting, etc.

For your convenience, I have also provided a report template, which you are welcome to use.

If you use the template, please ensure that you customize all content. The report length should be determined by the student as it is assumed the student will prepare a report that sufficiently meets the report's objectives and demonstrates an adequate engagement with the chosen topic. However, as a general guideline on length, the report should be greater than 10 pages, but it should not exceed 20 pages. Basic APA Style formatting for Research Reports

Double-space all work

Choose a neutral font, such as Calibri, Ariel, Georgia or Times New Roman

Indent paragraphs in the body of your work

Students should consider the use of whitespace, graphic highlighting techniques, and

headings to enhance the readability and aesthetics of the report.

Remember, you must use proper APA style formatting for in-text citations and in your

reference list and all material/content borrowed from secondary sources must be

properly attributed to its source to avoid plagiarism.

Penalties for plagiarized works (including work generated by an AI, such as ChatGPT)

can be severe and typically include an automatic grade of zero ("0") on the assignment and

a report of an academic offence on the student record. For detail, please refer to Copyright

for Students and Academic Integrity and policies A136 and A131.

Finally, please ensure your report includes ALL the components listed in the grading rubric

and that it meets the evaluative criteria. There are several additional resources posted on
