Researchers at Monmouth University wanted to know if ignoring a text message leads to distraction. They randomly assigned participants to either the "High restriction" group (not allowed to pick up phone or check it if they vibrate during the lecture) or the "Low restriction" group (participants were allowed to pick up their phones and read their text messages if they vibrated during the lecture).Participants were then shown a 30-minute video lecture during which, the researchers texted participants from different numbers so the participants wouldn't know the sender of the text was the researcher. Lastly, participants were given a knowledge test to determine how much of the lecture material they learned. They found that students in theHigh restrictiongroup had significantly lower grades on the knowledge test compared to those in theLow restrictiongroup. In other words, there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups with regard to knowledge gained.(8 pts.)
