It shed light on the incredible collaborative efforts between organizations like PMI-NIC and AVEC-PVS to address pressing social issues in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). What struck me the most was the innovative use of project management principles of the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), to drive tangible change in countries like the Congo. The program's focus on creating income generating activities like school gardens and apiaries where the parents volunteer not only provided practical solutions but also ensured sustainable outcomes, such as free access to education for children. What I found most captivating was the exchange program, providing an opportunity for the people of Congo and Italy to immerse themselves in diverse cultures, fostering mutual learning experiences. As someone who has worked as a housing case manager, I found the parallels between the challenges faced by Congolese communities and those encountered by my clients to be quite moving. Implementing similar structures to WBS, but in the form of service plans that map out tasks that need to be completed in 90-120 days, to help my clients improve life skills, job management, rent payment, and budgeting has proven instrumental in empowering individuals to navigate life challenges effectively and secure permanent housing. The article also highlighted a common pitfall where the Congolese embrace the concept of "live the moment," leading them to discard project management tools and deviate from project management structures once immediate needs are met. This resonated deeply with me, as I have witnessed firsthand how this can perpetuate cycles of instability and struggle among my clients. After securing housing, many revert to old habits, sometimes resulting in homelessness or a return to a shelter. Overall, the article reinforced the importance of sustained commitment and collaboration in tackling social issues. It is a reminder that while solutions may not always be easy, they are achievable through collective effort and the strategic application of project management and the WBS structure. Cobos, E.
