Chapter Four starts by describing work, which involves force and motion. Work is a scalar quantity because it is expressed as a magnitude with no direction. The formula for work is W=F x D. It has the unit newton-meter, which is called a joule, and in the British system, it would be called the foot-pound. When work is done, there is a change in energy. Work is the process when energy is transferred from one object to another. Energy is when an object that possesses energy will have the ability to do work. The sun (radiant energy) is the primary source of energy on Earth. We learned about kinetic energy, which is the energy of motion, and potential energy, which is the energy of position. The law of conservation of energy is described as energy that cannot be created or destroyed. This means that the total energy is always conserved when energy is changed from one form to another. The time rate of doing work is described as power (p=w/t), and it can also be described as p=fd/t. There are six forms of energy, including gravitational, chemical, nuclear, electrical, radiant, and thermal. Numerous alternative energy sources are not based on burning fossil fuels; they are renewable energy sources, which are energy from natural processes that are replenished constantly. Examples of these types of energy are hydropower, wind power, solar power, geothermal power, tides, biofuels, and biomass. The world is emphasizing the use of alternative energy sources and using energy more efficiently. As a country, we must be concerned with how much energy we use. Many companies are producing energy-efficient products. In my part of the country, we are seeing numerous solar fields developing. Many people don't like to see these solar panels taking over farmland. I'm torn because we need both to survive. I know my family has decided to leave our acres as farm acres. This chapter brought many more formulas. I feel like I understand the information, I just need to apply the given formulas. I have not attempted the homework or quiz yet, so I decided to do the discussion while the information is fresh. Good luck to all as we move forward in the chapters!
