Body Dysmorphic Disorder is when someone is preoccupied with one or more perceived defects or flaws in their physical appearance (APA, p. 272, 2022). Additionally, the flaws are not seen by others or are insignificant enough to be seen. The individual is preoccupied regarding the flaws and often compares themselves to others. This preoccupation leads to impairments in the individual's daily functioning.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder is prevalent today due for different reasons. The mean age at disorder onset is 16-17 years, the median age at onset is 15 years, and the most common age at onset is 12-13 years (APA, p. 274, 2022). The onset age of body dysmorphic disorder is alarming to me and to add the influence that social media has on the youth of today can have drastic effects. Body dysmorphic disorder can be seen in different cultures and ways throughout the world. However, in some third world countries body dysmorphic disorder is not as prevalent due to the need for basic needs instead of one's physical appearance.
Social media has contributed to the increase in body dysmorphic disorder. Imagines that are shared on social media can be altered to show a more favorable appearance of oneself and can lead those who have body dysmorphic disorder to do certain things to their appearance to obtain the desire look. There has been acknowledgment that there is a need to focus on online behaviors related to social comparison, judgment about appearance and viewing manipulated and idealized images as potentially most important for identifying when social media use may have a detrimental effect on body image or disordered eating (Zimmer-Gembeck et. al., p. 75, 2021). Additionally, culture can influence the likelihood of this disorder due to environmental factors. Those who grew up in an abusive environment where they were teased or neglected can lead to an individual to develop this disorder.
