Provide feedback on the questions and plan for educating the client about trauma and
explain the social worker's role in the recommended intervention given the scope of practice below.
Working for the military for the last 20 plus years I have had my share of working with service members who have suffered some form of trauma while servicing in the United States Army. Many of the service members have been diagnosed with PTSD. One of the first things I normally do is to let the service member know that they are safe, and they are in a safe place. I listen and I acknowledge their pain. I encourage the service member to speak freely when they are ready. I give them a chance to tell me whatever they need and want to say without any pressure or judgment. I give them respect and my goal is to get them to know that they can trust me with their trauma. Something that I say to some of my service members is that "we can't heal what we can't speak on". I have empathy for them, and I let them know I will be available when they are ready to speak their truth, whatever that may be.
