Social Psychology the study of social interactions or as our textbook lays out "the scientific study of human social interaction, including our perceptions of one another and of social situations" (Sabates, 2013). Moreover, Sabates (2013), found this branch of psychology attempts to understand a variety of social phenomena, including: attraction, bigotry, impression formation, reliability of eyewitnesses, persuasion, inconsistency in behaviors and professed attitudes, as well as when and whom we are most likely to help. These questions are further explored by Cherry (2020) in her video entitled: The process of conducting ethical research in Psychology. She expresses that "social psychology shows us more than any other field in psychology is just how powerful the social context is, in affecting how we act and how we think and how we feel" (Cherry, 2020, 00:01:15). This field more than any other attempts to understand how human beings while autonomous can be swayed to act and feel through interactions with their social environment. While obtaining this data it is paramount that we do so in an ethical fashion we can be sure we are to this by following The Belmont Reports ethical principles of clinical research. Summed up in three principles they are:1. Respect for persons - Individuals must be treated as autonomous agents2. Beneficence - Do no harm3. Justice - Requires that individuals and groups be treated fairly and equitably in terms of bearing the burdens and receiving the benefits of research. These are expanded upon, but in simple terms participants must freely consent to the study while having informed consent of what they are agreeing to participate in. Participants must be made aware of the possible risks if any, and that the study is equitable and inclusive (T, 2015). The Bible has a lot to say about social Psychology many practical aphorisms to guide us throughout life. Romans 12:2 states, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God" (The Holy Bible, ESV, 1973/2016, Romans 12:2). I specifically appreciate this verse because it doesn't call us to mindless beings that dogmatically live by a preordained cookie cutter method, rather it abhors us to use our discernment to understand the will of God. Proverbs speaks to this idea that we must hold to the commandments of the Lord, living in virtue. Proverbs 25:28 states, "A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls" (The Holy Bible, ESV, 1973/2016, Proverbs 25:28). This verse always is a reminder that I must live my life with discretion and precision in my actions; not letting the ways of the world or my social situation dictate or undermine my character. The Bible is filled with wisdom that is as practical now as I imagine it was at the time of its conception. Always reminding me that it is more often than not good practice and guardrails adopted from scripture that save me, rather than my fickle willpower. References
