A client comes in to tell her social worker about her abusive husband and how last night he threatened to kill her and her daughter if they told anybody about what occurs in their house.

Social worker does not make eye contact with client. Social worker is more concerned about why the mother told her about the situations going on at home.

Social worker is attentive to the conversation and writing down things the client says. She ask how the client feels and offers resources for the client that can help her immediately.

Empowerment

A teenager has come in that is an alcoholic and has been kicked out of school and his home due to his addiction.

Social worker focuses on the things the client has done wrong and focuses on the things he has lost.

Social worker looks towards the future. The social worker acknowledges the past but looks for strengths the client has. The social worker also looks to create goals for the client and involves him on his future plans.

When a child is involved in trauma informed care that means that they are being cared by somebody that understands their trauma can have a lasting affect. Through trauma informed care children will begin to work with somebody who can help put their emotional well-being at the forefront (Levenson, 2020). This can be done by doing deliberate practices that focus on things such as trust, respect, hope and shared power. Through learning about these different areas they will hopefully decrease a lot of the symptoms of trauma that they may be experiencing. In my first example a trauma informed approach would benefit the mother by making the mother feel safe with the social worker by building trust with the social worker. Through this built trust the client is able to open up more to the social worker in order for the social worker to continue to foster them through trauma informed care. In my second example the teenager would benefit from the trauma informed approach because he would be getting a social worker that would be empowering him to make more positive decisions regardless of the choices he has made in the past. The social worker would be empowering him to set new goals to overcome his addiction and recognize that he is more than his addiction. In the future when clients come social workers will have had examples and practice of using the trauma informed care so they will be more comfortable with it. They will know which approach to best use on clients. Clients will also be more open and trusting to the social workers when they use this approach with them as it is apart of building their rapport.

A patient aged 14 came into the hospital and discovered that she is pregnant. She then expressed that her stepfather has been sexually abusing her since the age of 7.

The social worker is only concerned with disclosing the information to her mother.

The social worker actively listens to the trauma that she experiences living with her stepfather, empathize with her and express that we will address this situation one step at a time. The social worker also stated that she will explain each step before so that the patient feels safe and not blindsided.

Trustworthiness

A 15-year-old client expressed that she was sexually abused by a teacher in her school. She recently opened to her mother who expressed that she was lying because she was scared that she was going to find out she was failing classes.

The social worker wants to solve the problem and express that she should leave her fianc for good.

The social worker assess that the client has difficulties trusting individuals due to the response of her mother, expressing this can help build the foundation of the client professional relationship. Always want to assess the strengths the client has so coping skills so they do not have this feeling in relationships.

A trauma-informed approach helps identify the lasting impact of trauma has on a child's physical, social, emotional, and psychological well-being. Trauma-informed approach assist children who experience sexual abuse by ensuring that they have a safe and trusting environment for the child to grow. Children who experience sexual abuse struggle with vulnerability as well as mistrust. During sessions, it is imperative to approach children with empathy and work to ensure they understand boundaries to help them establish trust and safety. According to Levenson (2020), "Our earliest childhood relationships help us establish a foundation of trust when we receive consistent and responsive caretaking; when these conditions are absent, attachment and intimacy with others can be undermined". In sessions you also want to ensure that they do not feel retraumatize by asking insensitive questions. As a social worker, you want to be considerate of the child's emotional state. You want to focus on the child's needs, strengths, triggers, and progress to support them in their journey of healing.
