1. For this discussion, I chose the phosphate buffer system in the body. The phosphate buffer system operates in the internal fluids of all cells. It consists of dihydrogen phosphate ions as the hydrogen ion donor ( acid ) and hydrogen phosphate ion as the ion acceptor ( base ). If additional hydroxide ions enter the cellular fluid, they are neutralized by the dihydrogen phosphate ion. If extra hydrogen ions enter the cellular fluid, they are neutralized by the hydrogen phosphate ion. Suppose this buffer system does not work correctly. In that case, the body may have an elevated amount of phosphorous in the bloodstream, which can cause high phosphorus, also called hyperphosphatemia. High phosphorus is often a sign of kidney damage. For someone with healthy kidneys, the average amount of phosphorus (phosphate) in the blood is between 2.5 to 4.5 mg/dL (The American Kidney Fund, 2022). High phosphorus in the blood does not cause any symptoms; however, this abnormality will cause calcium to be removed from the bones and other body parts. This will cause hypocalcemia and will manifest some signs of the disorder, such as muscle cramps, weak bones, bone and joint pain, and itchy skin or rash. This disorder generally has something to do with the kidneys. Treatment depends on what is causing the imbalance. If a person is undergoing dialysis, the doctor may adjust the duration of the dialysis to remove extra phosphorous in the body.

2. Hemoglobin is considered to be one of the most efficient buffers in the body, and also one of the quickest reacting buffers of the blood. If hemoglobin does not work properly during the conversion of CO2 into bicarbonate, this will throw the whole blood's pH level off. Patients who experience a decrease in the pH level of the blood are likely to experience symptoms along the lines of drowsiness, stupor, coma, and eventually death. Imbalances in the blood are usually indicative signs that other organs in the body have an imbalance in the pH levels, and the blood just continually circulates this imbalanced blood. In cases of metabolic acidosis it is often common to counterattack the imbalance with Sodium bicarbonate treatments to regulate the pH levels.
