Person 1 :

Reading this article, I did not see much of my current self in regards to speaking like a leader. I realized that I have much to learn on how to speak like a leader and hold the attention of my audience. I related very much to Nancy in this article with how she practiced day and night for her presentation, left no room for error and then ultimately fell flat on her face because she did not meet relevancy to the agenda that the meeting was about. I understood her position as I can see myself getting worked up over an incoming presentation, practicing at all hours of the day and then losing the attention of the panel because I either did not hit the notes that they were looking for or because I was not speaking in a way that related to them. With that being said, I am confident in the fact that there is always something to learn and work on. The steps mentioned in the article were helpful insight into how to talk like a leader and how to build relationships with colleagues to the point that they come to you for advice or for your opinion as they value what you have to say and what you think.

In my current job, I can see my boss as being one of these leaders who hold the attention of whoever is in the audience. When we have bi-weekly meetings with his managers, they are all hanging on to every word that he says because they know that once he says it the conversation will be concluded and he will be onto the next thing. There is no time for distractions in his meetings and everyone understands the level of respect and power that he holds.

I stated that I believed communication to be both an art and a science. This article really seems to support the more strategic aspect of communication. When you only use your own style of communication without a strategy, it can lead to miscommunication. The example at the beginning of the article really reflects this. The woman thought her presentation was going great but due to her lack of strategy, it fell short. I feel like, in many ways, I have a decent executive voice, but there are a few ways that I can improve. One thing that I struggle with is being a visionary. I am sometimes good at seeing the big picture, but I often struggle with anticipating future issues and complications and articulating that in an effective way. Another way to improve my executive voice is to improve my strategic relationships. At my current job, I don't hold a leadership role but I am trying to work myself up to one. I know some of my senior managers and talk with them occasionally. If I am more intentional with how I interact with them, I might have a better chance at getting a better role in the company.
