The focus of my doctoral study is on the relationship between employee engagement and patient satisfaction. I am interested in incorporating the quality of care into the study and am actively determining how to best link these three variables. The study will delve into literature surrounding positive employee engagement techniques, as well as the importance of patient satisfaction in providing quality services.
One theory of relevance to this topic is Kahn's theory of engagement, which suggests that personal engagement is driven by two key factors: an employees' psychological presence and their role performance (Byrne, 2022). Engagement is fluid rather than static and increases when employees can show their true self at work. The theory also puts forth three psychological conditions of meaningfulness, safety, and availability that influence an employee's engagement or disengagement. All three require the appropriate resources, understanding, and a sense of relatability in order to effectively determine positive or negative engagement.
Understanding Kahn's engagement theory is especially relevant given its holistic view of the whole person and an understanding of the engagement fluidity based on a variety of factors. A crucial aspect of the theory is its emphasis on the influence exerted by organizational culture on engagement, and the necessity of implementing changes where needed to promote improved engagement. Therefore, this theory aligns well with my study as it is practical and adaptable, applicable across various variables and organizational structures, and aimed at enhancing employee engagement.
