Motivation Theory: Supporting and Contrasting Theories
Leaders continuously search for the primary motivators to enhance followers' performance. Company leaders often approach motivation and drive from different avenues, but all aim to produce company success. Motivation theories are based on the needs of people (Northouse, 2022). These theories are centered around the needs of every human; safety, love, self esteem, self care, and self-actualization (Barbuto & Story, 2011).
Three Aspects of Motivation
Three aspects of motivation that are essential in building solid teams are the shared commitment to the mission of an organization, transparent and trusting relationships, and developing a safe and welcoming atmosphere. The shared commitment to the organization's mission brings teams together because of a shared value. This aspect implies that if the team connects on a collective mission, the members are more likely to act productively (Shultz, 2014). Motivating people to share their thoughts and options ties them to the project's mission.
Transparent and trusting relationships are another motivating factor for leader-follower productivity. When follower feel that communication is trusted and transparent, the group feel comfortable enough to discuss the need for change. When teams experience these types of relationships, leaders can use informational influence to lead because the people they lead to trust them (Raven, 1993).
Developing an atmosphere where employees feel safe is another way to motivate teams. Employees' safety, both physical and emotional, is essential. Diversity and inclusion are aspects of building a safe community where collaboration can result in productivity. Employees look to leaders to enhance safety which can motivate followers to work to their full potential (Bahn, 2013).
Example of Professional Motivation
In my professional experience, I have seen these three aspects of motivation in action. As a leader in a non profit organization, I have been trained to think about leadership from a person centered approach. In my organization, we are all trained on psychological first aid to manage employee burnout. Psychological first aid is alive in all the programs, and resource employees can use for assistance. This is part of the mission of the organization and something all employees are passionate about.
