- The disorder that I chose to review is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I chose this disorder because it is something that I cope with personally and work with youth who have experienced significant trauma that this disorder is something they also have been diagnosed with. According to the book, PTSD is distinguished by decreased activity in the medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus (Hough, 2022). In people with anxiety disorder like PTSD the amygdala and hippocampus have been observed as being smaller. In the US, approximately 4% of adults are diagnosed with PTSD per the 2017 Harvard Medical School.
The DSM-5 involves an elaborate evaluation of symptoms and comparing them to specific criteria as it relates to different disorders. It acts as a guidebook allowing professions to determine specifics symptoms a person may have and which diagnosis or plural they could be exhibiting. The DSM-5 provides a set of diagnostic criteria that indicates which symptoms would be present as well as for how long. It also assists with ruling out certain diagnoses as well.
Posttraumatic stress disorder or PTSD according to the DSM-5 is the development of characteristic symptoms following exposure to one or more traumatic events (APA, 2022). PTSD can occur at any age, and symptoms usually begin within the first 3 months after the trauma. While this is typically the case there could be a delay and that month or even years later symptoms appear. The time frame that someone might experience symptoms varies as someone could recover within 3 months where some might continue to have symptoms for longer than 12 months. Often it can happen where symptoms reoccur and intensification may occur in response to reminders of the original trauma, ongoing life stressors or newly experienced traumatic events (APA, 2022.
