In social work organizations, the process of creating a shared future vision and developing a plan to make that goal a reality is referred to as strategic planning. This process involves employees, the board of directors, and stakeholders to connect throughout the process to establish practical ways to enact change (University of Kansas Center for Community Health and Development, n.d.). The organization can set small goals through collaboration while working toward the agency's long-term vision. The goals established in the strategic plan should be directly related to the vision and purpose of the agency that is developing the plan. Strategic plans are especially effective when agencies are starting from the ground up, when starting larger projects when the organizations are moving in a new direction, or when applying for funding for special projects (citation).

The elements of a strategic plan include vision and mission statements, core values, SWOT analysis, long-term goals, yearly objectives, and action plans. Vision statements are typically the organization's dream, what the agency hopes to see for the community they serve. For example, the vision statement from the agency, Prisma Health, "is inspired to help people live their healthiest lives" (Prisma Health, 2022). The mission statement of an organization outlines the present-day purpose of the organization. For example, the mission statement is "At Prisma Health, we are on a journey to transform the health care experience for our patients and families by living our purpose: Inspire health. Serve with compassion. Be the difference" (Prisma Health, 2022). Swot analysis stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. It typically consists of a box for each area and is then utilized to determine the best action for agencies (SmartDraw, 2018). Long-term goals usually go hand in hand with objectives, focusing on process, behavior, and community-level outcome objectives. This step in the process is usually the what, how, and when action will be accomplished. Finally, action plans detail what will happen, who is responsible for what, the expected completion date, required resources, barriers to completing goals, and what collaborative efforts may be needed (University of Kansas Center for Community Health and Development, n.d.).

How is it useful to leadership and the organization as a whole?

Strategic plans are helpful to leadership and organizations in several ways. First, the strategic plans help the organization benefit from knowing where to allocate resources. Next, the strategic plan helps organizations and leaders know the right direction to take to achieve particular goals that benefit the agency (Middle Tennessee State University, 2024). Next, the strategic plan can help leaders establish their professional and personal goals for the agency. Finally, strategic plans can help agencies and leaders plan structured goals for where they hope to grow and how they plan to get there (Middle Tennessee State University, 2024). Creating a strategic strategy for an organization can provide a comprehensive road map for success.

Finally, identify and explain one potential problem that could arise during the strategic planning process.

Common problems that could arise during the strategic planning process include the need for ownership, alignment, communication, and slow adoption. Of these common problems, lack of communication is the most problematic. Without adequate communication, there is bound to be a lack of teamwork, which causes a domino effect in the planning process. It can be challenging to obtain all the wanted and needed information, especially as the agency grows, staff changes, and expertise shifts. I feel this was especially evident during the early COVID-19 days when worksites shifted to remote, and digital collaboration is not the same as being able to work together in person, draw on ideas, and have visual aids accessible to everyone simultaneously. To effectively work through the strategic planning process, leaders and organizations should seek every opportunity to collaborate, communicate, and devise follow-up plans to review progress as the strategy is executed (De Marco, 2022).

Despite its numerous benefits, strategic planning is not without challenges; resistance to transformation is a significant barrier that can obstruct advancement and impair the fulfillment of strategic intentions within social work organizations. This resistance often arises from diverse stakeholder perspectives, interests, and concerns, which may lead to conflicts or reluctance to embrace new strategies. This challenge requires effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and strong leadership support to foster buy-in and collaboration. By addressing concerns and building consensus among stakeholders, social work organizations can enhance the likelihood of successful implementation and achieving their strategic goals.
