Progressive Disipline - When it comes to the process of using increasingly severe steps for when an employee fails to correct any problem right after given a reasonable opportunity to do so.

Step 1: Verbal Warning - This briefly establishes the problem to be corrected and informs the employee what needs to be done.

Step 2: Written Warning - This warning is written down and then copied in a memo to the personnel file with the subject line "Written Warning". This signifies the more serious nature of the action.

Step 3: Suspension - Dicipline that includes suspension without pay, a supervision should generally legal consel prior to proceeding. Also a method known as 'Sleeping on it'.

Step 4: Termination - A supervisor may allow a second suspension before termination. But if the employee does not coroperate then the termination happens and more formal legal process occurs.

The three common steps of progressive discipline are an oral warning, written warning and probation. An oral warning is when you discuss the problem with an employee in an informal matter but directly with the employee. An example of this is a discussion to clarify a misunderstanding between an employee and manager. A written warning is when the manager takes formal action which includes a formal meeting in a private office with an employee. An example of this is excessive instances of coming to work late. Probation is a specific time period in which an employee must consistently meet job standards or other reasonable conditions in order to keep being employed. An example of this is providing a time line in which the employee needs to meet the standards and improve or they will be terminated.
