Respond to two other classmates and compare your observations on how the historical context influenced Freud's theory. - ask questions to your peer. Think about the historical context of your selected theory and how it may have influenced your chosen theory's development. Use citations and references

Student one:

Although his theory and contributions to the field are considered controversial nowadays, Freud's theory of psychoanalysis significantly influenced the time he lived in. At the prime of his studies, Sigmund Freud lived during the Victorian era, a time known for its strict social conventions and sexual repression. The cultural attitudes of the time influenced Freud's exploration of sexuality, emphasizing the unconscious mind and how repressed desires play a factor as determinants of behavior (Funder, 2019). Freud was influenced by theories such as Darwin's theory of evolution, such as the idea that inherited traits are instincts (Funder, 2019). These theories provided a framework for Freud's research for understanding human behavior with the foundation that instincts play a role in the unconscious mind. He proposed that unconscious aggressive and sexual instincts drove human behavior due to our evolutionary past. Freud's personality theory of psychoanalysis also coincides with the rise of psychotherapy. Freud focused on childhood experiences' role in the unconscious mind when treating mental illness. The scientific, cultural, and intellectual context of that era provided the foundation for Freud's groundbreaking ideas, which later created his psychoanalysis theory (Funder, 2019).

Student two:

When Freud was doing the research to develop his theories, the world was in a turbulent time period. Freud lived through the time period during both world wars and patriarchal societal expectations reigned. These were heavy influences on Freud's upbringing and his personality, and thus the development of his theories (Funder, 2019). His patriarchal influences are deeply rooted in his personality theories because all influences in his theories trace back to a maternal figure. Freud's theories reflect many sexist beliefs that are considered to be very outdated in today's society. The theories are fairly sexist and binary regarding development. His clinical experiences are where Freud drew conclusions to develop his personality theories (Funder, 2019). The patient's he worked with in his clinical experience were diagnosed with psychosis and other neuropsychological conditions and therefore do not best represent the general population at the time. That would make his research one sided and biased.

Allan Schore's research was conducted primarily in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Because of the evolution of technology, sexuality, universal cultural influences, and society's general movement, his research is still valid and expanding today. His research's influence on current therapy trends is still helping people world wide.
