ORGINAL QUESTION:
Using the links in this Unit, find a Federal or State Statute that is relevant to your life, career, job, etc. and explain its relevancy.Tell us your opinion about the public policy behind the law. What public policy is served by this law? In other words, what problem does it address?
CLASSMATES POST:
The State Statute I am chosing to write about is Mississippi Code Title 67. Alcoholic Beverages 67-7-81. Prohibition of sales to minors; presentation of false documentation as to age; penalties.
This law basically punishes any person of legal drinking age who contributes to any person under twenty-one drinking. This law makes it illegal to sell, furnish, dispose of, give, or cause to be sold, any alcoholic beverage to any person under the age of twenty-one and shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by fine. It also punishes any person under the age twenty-one, who purchases, recieves, or has in his possession in any public place and shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and punished by fine.
This law is relevant to me because I am a bartender part-time. In a fast pace, high volume environment, it is highly important that I am dilegent with checking IDs and do so to the best of my ablity. Currently, people do not need to be of drinking age to enter the bar that I work for, so this means the guests can range from all ages. Not everyone who wants a drink is legal age to drink so in order to follow the laws and keep everyone safe, it is crucial that I am paying attention to detail when it comes to checking IDs.
I believe that this is a great form of public policy because it keeps our underage folks from drinking illegally and more importantly, keeps them off the roads. Drunk driving can be disastorous for anyone, and as a bartender I do not wish to contribute to that. While I do not feel that underage drinking is a nationwide problem, I believe it is this law that keeps it in check.
